CARES Act

In 2020, the CARES Act was signed (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act). This act created an education stimulus package that included a Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) which contained over $6 billion for postsecondary education emergency grants to students who experienced a disruption of their education as a result of this Coronavirus outbreak. These emergency grant funds are intended to be used for “expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to coronavirus (including eligible expenses under a student’s cost of attendance such as food, housing, course materials,
technology, health care, and childcare).” The grants also provide institutions with expenses
related to the disruption of campus operations on account of the pandemic.
