Grants vs Loans

There are two categories of federal student aid: grants and loans. When you receive your options for student aid you may be eligible for both. You may be wondering how they are different. Below is an explanation on the differences between grants and loans.

Grants

Grants are money that does not have to be paid back. There are a few different types of grants available to applicants:

Students who demonstrate financial need are eligible to receive a Federal Pell Grant for up to 12 semesters (or a total of 6 years).

The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant is available to students who are in dire financial circumstances and require exceptional financial aid in order to attend school.

For students who are not PELL eligible due only to less financial need, but whose parent or guardian died as a result of military service in Iraq or Afghanistan after 9/11 and who were, at the time of death, less than 24 years of age.

Loans

Loans are borrowed money which need to be repaid. There are a few different types of loans available to applicants:

Direct subsidized loans are for student borrowers who demonstrate financial need. The U.S. Department of Education pays the loan's interest while the student is in school, as well as during grace and deferment periods. Students with direct subsidized loans do not need to pay interest while they are enrolled in school. This type of loan offers more repayment options than private student loans.

Eligibility of direct unsubsidized loans is not based on financial need. The student is responsible for paying the interest on this loan while enrolled in school. This type of loan offers more repayment options than private student loans.

The Plus loan is a type of loan is for parents of dependent students. The borrower is responsible for all interest on the loan. Plus loans offer more repayment options than private student loans.
